Corría el mes de marzo del año 2008 cuando mi esposa Ofelia, luego de unas vacaciones en familia, comienza con esta pesadilla que duraría tres largos años.
Es así que en pleno estado menopáusico desde hacía ya un tiempo, y luego de haberse extraído el DIU (dispositivo intrauterino) aparecieron los primeros síntomas, de lo que se pensó sería una probable infección urinaria, y por la cual debió ser internada en los primeros días, pero que fue descartándose conforme pasaban lo días, semanas y primeros meses al no obtenerse resultados positivos, tanto de laboratorio, como de los tratamientos instituidos.
Comenzamos entonces la penosa etapa de consultas a diversos y reconocidos profesionales de la especialidad (urología), clínicos, ginecólogos y hasta psiquiatras…con el afán de investigar y diagnosticar que estaba ocurriendo con su salud, que clínicamente cursaba con intensos dolores en vejiga y región pélvica, con una urgencia y frecuencia urinaria de entre 90 y 100 veces por día, o también a veces con la imposibilidad de orinar, a pesar del fuerte deseo de hacerlo, acompañando a dichos síntomas, un importante deterioro de su estado general y psicológico.
En consecuencia se solicitan los estudios pertinentes, incluida cistoscopia con biopsia, apareciendo con los primeros resultados, la “probable evidencia” de anatomía patológica… que si bien por lo que se cree y presupone a la fecha, no es excluyente ni da diagnóstico definitivo, a la hora de valorar todo el síndrome clínico, sumó para llegar finalmente al diagnóstico de: cistitis intersticial.
Anécdota: Enorme agradecimiento al prestigioso y experimentado Dr. Otto Maglione de Clínica Mayo, de Córdoba Capital, quien luego de escuchar y analizar atentamente todo lo que venía padeciendo Ofelia, fue el primero en darnos un posible diagnostico diciendo: “Mire doctora…por lo que usted me cuenta, podríamos estar ante la presencia de una patología poco frecuente y bastante difícil de tratar, llamada “cistitis intersticial”.
Terminada la consulta, entre lágrimas y con voz entrecortada por el gran dolor físico que cursaba de manera permanente por aquellos días, más la angustia generada por dicha posibilidad diagnóstica, me dice: “Eso tengo yo, eso tengo yo”… a lo que respondí intentando en vano contenerla “No desesperes…por algo Dios puso esto en tu camino”.
Mi querido Dr. Medina, lo felicito por el esfuerzo en materializar tantos anos de estudio y perseverancia en este sitio web, con el fin de poder compartir y pluralizar su experiencia con Ofelia y otros tantos pacientes de Argentina, Sudamérica y Europa.
